Storm Cruiser Jacket

Image of the flagship model "Storm Cruiser" rainwear with high breathability
The Storm Cruiser, Montbell's flagship rain shell, has been evolving since its birth in 1982. This 10th-generation model uses "DRY-TEC," a proprietary waterproof and breathable material that achieves high breathability and water resistance. It has been reborn to be more breathable and flexible. With high performance in terms of ease of movement and lightness, it is an "all-weather" shell that can be worn comfortably not only in rain but in all types of weather.

Waterproof breathable fabric "DRY-TEC" with high breathability

Among the waterproof and breathable materials we use at Montbell, this is the material that achieves the best breathability and high water resistance. While protecting against wind and rain from the outside, it efficiently releases excess heat and moisture during activity, keeping the inside of the garment comfortable.
Breathability: 40,000g/m2/24hrs (JIS L-1099B-1 method) (Reference value)

Outer fabric: high strength Ballistic Nylon

Compared to conventional nylon, this fabric has about twice the tear strength at the same weight, combining high durability with lightweight properties.

Lining: High-density nylon that feels smooth

Image of soft and comfortable lining
The fabric is made by tightly weaving special nylon threads that do not retain moisture. Due to its smoothness, the lining makes it easy to layer with and feels dry even next to skin.
Eco-Friendly Material
Storm Cruiser fabric does not use PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which are of concern due to their environmental impact. The lining uses nylon made from 60% plant-based materials. This reduces the use of petroleum-based materials and also helps to lower carbon dioxide emissions.

The importance of care and maintenance

Rainwear maintenance guide, Image of rainwear layered on top of a water-repellent fabric surface.

"Washing" is essential to maintaining performance over time

The Storm Cruiser Jacket's water repellent does not use PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which are of concern due to their environmental impact. While the non-PFAS water repellent components have initial performance comparable to PFAS-containing ones, they are less durable due to their lower ability to repel oil. To prevent this, it's important to wash the garment frequently to thoroughly remove contaminants, like dirt. Additionally, applying heat through a dryer or iron helps restore the water repellent treatment to its original state, maintaining water repellency. With proper maintenance, it's possible to balance rainwear performance with reduced environmental impact.
